I am not a monster ...

At least not all the time.

OK, I was reading a post someone made the other day where they remarked upon meeting one of their idols in the form of a horror writer. They then went on to say how surprised they were that said writer was ‘so normal’, just like everybody else, and it got me to thinking (I know, it’s dangerous thinking) about how we (or namely me) are perceived as writers. Do people really think that because I write about killing people, monsters and suchlike that I am inherently evil? Am I a product of my own imagination? Just because I have a vivid (perhaps sometimes sick) imagination, it doesn’t mean I really go out and do the things I write about. Well, you didn’t think I’d admit to my crimes, did you?

So what do other people think? Do you believe that if someone writes about something evil, that it must mean they are an evil person themselves?

Absolutely not! Do romance writers swoon at the feet of every handsome man? (If they can find one) Do crime writers commit crime? Do sci-fi writers monnlight as astronauts?

No.

On the other hand, I sometimes find it fun to pretend to be such a person. When you do that, you find the friends you have left all have a great sense of humor.

The rest, of course, are horribly mangled.

I think everyone thinks I'm mad anyway, Phil, so they wouldn't take much convincing ;)

As a horror writer, I've often wondered about this too. Sometimes when I tell people what I write I get that look (you know the one). I hope most people know it's not a reflection of our own personalities. Not usually anyway.

If by writing horror you are evil then as Ozzy Osbourne has said about hell: "we're gonna have a really good time down there!"
